Once the data has been imaged, a determination must be made as to which data is to be extracted for forensic examination. This process is called data culling. Information is acquired from email servers and their mailboxes, file servers, home directories, and shared folders, as well as data type and location. In addition to the content of the device, metadata is extracted that identifies the file’s creator, file modifications and send history. Encrypted, hidden, deleted and corrupted files can often be recovered. Every step in the data culling process is facilitated in a manner that protects the integrity of the data.
